Winter Mackinac Magic and Bodie’s First Writing Attempt 1/15/17

Hi All!

Winter has come and gone in Florida!

Winter has come and gone in Florida!

You think I’m kidding, but I’m not.  We had a couple of REALLY COLD days and nights – it even got into the thirties a time or two.  But, not to worry.  We’re now in the 70’s again, and I have to say it’s pretty darn perfect weather right now!

It was even nice enough to some of the Sunset Inlet ladies to eat outside at a great little restaurant we discovered recently - Hammock Organic Café and Boutique. Can't beat getting to eat and shop in the same place! Yummy!

On Mackinac it’s 29 today, and for the next two weeks it looks as though 35 or 36 may be the high temp.  All the photos below are compliments of Clark Bloswick except for two.

Tuesdays are trash days downtown, and a little snow storm doesn't stop these hard and hardy workers and horses from completing their route!

On Saturday morning the Mighty Huron was cutting through swome surface ice as it arrived early in the morning.

A sunset earlier in the week - perfect lighting. How can Clark continually be in the right place at the right time?

BODIE’S FIRST WRITING ASSIGNMENT

Hey!  It’s me – Bodie.  Mom said I could try and write a very short blog today.

I only have two questions. What's a blog, and what's writing?

I only have two questions. What’s a blog, and what’s writing?

So.  Mom tried to explain it to me.  She said a blog is where you tell someone out in space about something that is interesting to you or about something you like doing.

I got this.  I like food – dog food (dry and canned), people food (when I can steal it), trash can food (dry and wet), street food (little pieces of paper, bugs, smashed water bottles, lizards (after Maddie kills them), rocks, twigs, dried up chewing gum, bird seed.  You get the picture.  Oh, and poop – but Mom says I don’t like it as much as Bear did – not yet anyway.  I’ll have to work on that.

What else do I like?

My crate!  I sleep in here at night, but I also grab naps here when Mom’s working or watching tv in this room.  I also stay in here when Mom and Dad leave the house.  I think that’s because they are worried I’d un-stuff the couch if they left me free.  And I can’t say that I wouldn’t.

What else.  I LOVE dryer sheets!  I stand in front of the dryer when Mom gets the clothes out, and we have a race to see who can spot the dryer sheet first.  Mom usually wins because she can see INSIDE the dryer.  I have to wait and see if mom doesn’t spot it.  In that case it just falls out of the dryer on the floor, and I’m on it like a wolf.  I’ve only managed to swallow two so far – because Mom is pretty good at prying my jaws apart.  She was worried after I swallowed the first one, but something called “Google” told her they weren’t very dangerous if they’d already been through the dryer.  And – like most things I swallow – it all came out ok in the end.

I love being outside! Last night we were out on the deck and our neighbors next door had their little 8-mon-old granddaughter out on their third floor deck. She was trying to talk to me so hard! I loved watching her!

I love being outside! Last night we were out on the deck and our neighbors next door had their 8-month-old granddaughter out on their third floor balcony, and she was talking to me through the rails.  I don’t know why the grown-ups couldn’t understand what she was saying.  I understood her perfectly!

Mom is saying “that’s enough for the first time, Bodie”, so I will end for now.  Mom just read what I wrote and said it looked like I was going to do pretty good as a blog writer – especially for a kid!  I didn’t know she was serious though until she hugged me and said I was a good boy.  I really, really, really like when she calls me “a good boy” – because that is usually followed by a treat, which is the BEST kind of dog food EVER!

Did I mention I like food?

Ok, ok, Mom.  I’m stopping now!

Mom also says I’m a little too chatty at times.

Who, me?

Who, me?

Personal Note:  I received the following notification from Feedspot Blog last week:

img_3725

I hope some of you out there will know more about this than I do!  When I opened the link, I learned that Bree’s Mackinac Island Blog was listed as the 14th most popular ISLAND blog among the thousands of island blogs Feedspot holds in their index.  The rankings change by the week and are based on Google reputation and Google search ranking, influence and popularity on Facebook, twitter, and other social media sites, quality and consistency of posts, and Feedspot’s editorial team and expert review.

As I said, I don’t really know what any of that means, but I say a very big “Thank You” for the designation!  And a huge thank you to all my readers who encourage me daily to keep writing!

Love you all, and God bless.

  1. Bodie did a great job with his first blog! He is amazing and hilarious! The thing about the dryer sheet is too funny! Never thought of a dog loving Bounce. Our dog Bear does this weird thing to. When we have the dryer on, he will go outside and rub against the vent. It is just crazy! When he comes in he smells fresh and clean!

Glad to hear all of the Floridians survived the cold temperatures. We are suppose to have ice in a few hours here in Iowa.

I can’t wait to go to the island on Wednesday. It is suppose to be in the mid 30’s so I hope the snow doesn’t melt away! I love blizzards but it seems like I won’t get one this trip!

    Hugs from Iowa!

  2. Bodie – Danny-dog and Miss Cocoa here – our human let us read your story and we are impressed! We’ve never thought of eating the dryer sheets! Mom puts them in a garbage pail that she thinks is safe from us………….perhaps from now on they won’t be………….I LOVE bird seed (says Miss Cocoa) – and I think I’m going to enjoy the raisins the bunny rabbit leaves near the seed (he comes out at night and we chase him – but he’s too fast for us to catch). Miss Coca was born and raised in Kentucky, until she came up here last fall – (Danny speaking here) and as I promised her, she is adjusting to the cold weather quite well – sometimes she stays outside longer than I do. Mom calls her Pokey-cocoa……….she dawdles. Well, nice to meet you Bodie. We look forward to hearing more about your adventures! You’re a lucky boy – but aren’t our humans the lucky ones to have us in their lives? Take care………….

    • Bunnies? I’m not familiar with those. Mom said she doesn’t think Florida has rabbits. But she did say there are a lot of them on Mackinac Island! I can’t wait to go visit there!

  3. Hey Bodie, really enjoyed your first blog! I also love food! Brenda congratulations on being selected as the top 25 island blogs. I am so glad I found it so many years ago. Always look forward to your posts.

  4. Well congratulates there @Bree1972! You deserve all the honors for sure. It’s you and your wonderful writings that we all love. Bodie did a great job for his first writing. I do see where he does like to talk but hey…that’s the way kids are. Clark..well if I didn’t know any better .. would have to say …some kind of magic…ALWAYS in the right place!. Oh and by the way, love ya girl and glad to hear that your not freezing anymore 🙂

  5. Nice first post, Brodie, and wonderful about your Island blog being selected as one of the top 25! Have heard you like outdoor play. Oh, me too!! Wondered if your ‘mom and dad’ have considered finding a young person to take you somewhere each day so you can run off a bit of your puppy energy? For pay, of course. My owner’s son used to exercise big dogs for a job. And he tossed frisbees and balls and chased me all around too – you get the idea. Then I was ready for a long nap and didn’t have as much energy left for getting into mischief. I chewed pencils and once ate 12 oz of Hershey’s kisses, wrappers and all! (Wrappers came out ‘in the end’ but I was in much distress that night). (But I didn’t break the fancy glass dish they were in, you will learn how to do tricks like that, I’m sure!) My this is long, will have my owner send it now. Love, Cindy the dog, (I actually ‘own’ them, they just don’t realize it!) 🙂 + paw print

  6. Congrats Bree! I am not surprised though. Your blog is very unique and pictures are always gorgeous. Bodie….it sounds like you are a very normal puppy. I can’t believe that dryer sheets are to easy to digest. You need to look for something else to get into! Keep mom on her toes,!!!

  7. Awesome blog update and congrats on the blog award!

I think it’s almost like being highly ranked on something like tripadvisor kinda maybe…….either way that’s pretty cool to earn that recognition!!

  8. Bodie you are so cute. I enjoyed your blog. But I don’t really like that you’re eating dryer sheets. That’s kind of weird. Can’t wait to meet you this summer.

  9. Bodie must have been paying more attention than you thought because his first blog is a winner! BTW, since there are only about a bazillion blogs on the web, being in the top 25 of anything is a-ma-zing! Congratulations, Miss Brenda. Job done exceptionally well! Also, a previous poster may be on to something. Could Clark be a leprechaun? Makes sense to me! Love, love, love his photos!

  10. Cupid here. Mom was like “Ooh look at the moon on that photo” and I told her I would handle the response tonight.
I’m two, but I’ve not had a blog yet. I’ll have to tell Mom that I need one. You should listen to Maddie. I have an older brother, and he knows everything. I mean everything about how life works and how to stare at the door until it opens. Food is okay, but you have to make sure it’s up to your standards. The other week Grandma made our treats with beef bouillon instead of chicken, and we told her that we wouldn’t eat them until she made them right. I did find out that if Mom cooks bacon and puts paper towels in the trash they are really good.

    • Glad to meet you, Cupid! Wow – mom didn’t tell me I’d have blog fans! This is way cool! I tend to ignore advice from Maddie right now. I’m a teenager, so I pretty much think I know everything and the “older folks” are really over the hill as far as advice. Hmmm – maybe I SHOULD pay attention more. I know Maddie doesn’t get nearly as many “no’s” after her name as I do! I already know about those flavored paper towels. You need to try the ones your mom drains country fried steak on. They are right up there with the bacon ones! Thanks for writing!

  11. Loved your addition Bodie and can’t wait to meet you on the Island. You are quite the clever dude! Thanks to for sharing so many pictures Bree. Your blog deserves every honor.

  12. Brenda,

First off and most inportantly, I’m so glad you managed to survive that horribly brutal Florida winter.

Bodie, Thank you for your entertaining blog entry. I see you’re just about as talented as Bear was. As a matter of fact, I don’t think you need any improvement at all. By the way, tell your mother and father to take you out in the country there in Florida and I’m sure that both you and Maddie will be able to chase rabbits til your hearts content: http://myfwc.com/wildlifehabitats/profiles/mammals/land/rabbit/

Speaking of blogs, Brenda, you certainly deserve the award, however I think it should have been for the best blog on the internet. At least that’s what I’ve told so many people, so I decided to give you something for FIRST PLACE. I f you check this address, you can see it : https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/df/bb/d3/dfbbd3a5a6db82e064f6f7566cb06932.jpg I’m sorry it couldn’t have been Lilacs, but there aren’t any here in Michigan this time of year and they don’t do well in Florida any time of year. Not only that, but Crape Myrtle are quite beautiful.

Since Jill is definitely Magic Jill, maybe Clark could be known as Conjurer Clark, the conjurer of beautiful scenes everywhere he goes.

  13. Bodie did a great job. I wonder what it is about those dryer sheets? ! Just loved the full moon picture. Clark is the best photographer (next to you Bree).
