On the Other Side of November 11/3/2013

It’s amazing what a couple nights of good sleep will do for your attitude.  When I jotted off that note to y’all on Friday evening, I was not at my best – to say the least.  Almost 20 hours sardined in a truck with my adorable husband and cuddly fur-babies isn’t usually that big a deal.  But add to that the stress of I-75 traffic in really bad weather the first day and a big dog who couldn’t seem to understand why he shouldn’t ride in the front seat with the rest of us the second day,  and . . . well, let’s just say the only one of us NOT needing an attitude adjustment was Maddie.  Why should she?  Her cushy bed – with her in it – sat squarely across my legs for two days while she snoozed through rain, sleek roads, wall to wall semi-trucks, and enough road construction to make you wonder if there is a single stretch along I-75 NOT being repaved, rerouted, or reconfigured!

We slept SO GOOD in our king-sized bed Friday night!  For the first time in 5 1/2 months there was room for Ted, Maddie and I to spread out and have our own space – and a lot of it.  Oh Lordy, that felt good!  We’re slowly getting things unpacked, but we’ve barely made a dent in the 10 boxes that are already here, and we have seven more that should arrive on Monday.  Time is something we have plenty of though, so no rush.

Ted and I both rode down to our favorite lake hang-out, Booger Bottom (BB) on Saturday afternoon for the South’s most important event of the Fall – the Georgia vs Florida game.  I mostly sat outside with the ladies and enjoyed catching up on everyone’s summer.  Oh my gosh, it was good to see everyone!

Georgia won, by the way.  Go DAWGS!

It’s been an awesome weekend here on the ri’vah.  Temps in the low 70’s, with blue skies and a little breeze.  Perfect.

So . . .  what next?  I wish I could tell you a plan today, but the truth is we just don’t have one yet.  Over the next month, while taking a little hiatus from the blog world, Ted and I will be doing a lot of praying, thinking, planning and searching.  Our first  agenda item is a Florida trip to see Julie and Matt and our two grandchildren.  They’ve moved into a new home while we’ve been gone, and we can’t wait to see them . . . and it.  We’re also hoping to get a chance to watch Matthew play football and soccer before the season is over.  While there, we’ll be working with a real estate agent to look at houses/condos in the Ormond Beach/Flagler Beach/New Smyrna Beach areas.  We’ll come home through Amelia Island/Fernandina Beach and maybe spend a couple of nights there – again looking at houses and condos with an agent.  We really have to see what our options are down there before we can begin to finalize “what’s next.”  I’ll be chronicling all that house searching in photos so I can share with you when I’m back online Sunday, December 1.

Another decision I hope to make this month is whether to continue with two blogs – one here in Georgia and one on the Island, or just combine them into one blended blog so you don’t have to switch back and forth.  Another aspect of that is how much time we’ll be spending next summer on the island – something we don’t know yet.   As I’ve done in the past, I’ll continue to try and keep you updated on Mackinac Island activities over the winter . . . with a LOT of help from island friends!  It will help keep all of us tuned in to the Island, and there’s no place more beautiful covered in snow than magical Mackinac.  Winter Island updates will begin in December also – probably Wednesday, December 4.

I checked on the article Stephanie Fortino wrote  on Bree’s Blog for The Town Crier and unfortunately the writing and photo is copyrighted because The Town Crier is not part of the Associated Press.  In a couple of weeks though you’ll be able to go online and read the article without a subscription – I’ll post a link to that when it’s available.  Ted and I were really excited Saturday when we received this week’s copy of the St. Ignace News and found they ran the article also!

It will be a busy November, but no busier than yours will be, I’m sure – especially if you have folks coming for Thanksgiving.  Bear and I will get started back working with our Pet Partners group in a week or so, and we are so thrilled about that.  I think he misses it as much as I do . . . truly, I really think he does.

For those of you new to the Mackinac Island blog, the other one I mentioned above, which is active in the winter, is Bree’s Lake Blackshear Blog at www.bree1976.wordpress.com.  If you need something to read one afternoon, you can go to that link and see what we do to stay busy down here in south Georgia!  It’s a more personal blog than the one I write from Michigan – filled with friends we’ve known for years and years and with lots of family gatherings.  And you might learn a historical thing of two about our neck of the woods!  You can click on the “follow” button to receive email announcements of blog posts.

I guess that’s it for now.  I’m sad saying good night because we won’t be “talking” for a little while.  But this little break is a good thing, and I’m expecting to come back December 1 filled with lots of news you’ll want to hear about.    Please keep us in your prayers, and each of you will be in mine.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving – filled with family, friends and good food.  Hold each other close, and make sure everyone you care for knows how much you love them.

And so I say to each of you – I love you (BIG hug)!

Good Lord willing, I’ll see you all back here on the other side of November!

  1. I guess this is where I go through withdrawal, but you surely deserve the time off. Enjoy your down time from the blog and have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family. See you online Dec. 1. God Bless!

  2. LOL….should we start a contest…will Brenda post “something” BEFORE Dec. 1st?… She will miss us as much as we will be missing her.
    Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

  3. You certainly do deserve the down time. If I had made the trip down I 75 I would have had a breakdown by now. We try to never use interstates if possible. Enjoy the time with your family and GA friends. God’s blessing on you all.

  4. As much as you need the time off, I sure am gonna miss you! Enjoy your time visiting your grandkids (I know how much I miss mine when I don’t see them) and Julie and Matt, not to mention your family Thanksgiving. Take lots of pictures and let us know what happens with your search for a house/condo. (Bud hurt his back a few days ago playing with the grandkids…ended up in the hospital, taken by ambulance…tell Ted to be careful) LOL! Love you guys!! 🙂

  5. Hi Bree,

As I mentioned before I’m playing catch up. I’ve finished 2009 and just did 2013. So I have 2010, 2011, and 2012 to go. I will have enough reading to keep me occupied during your hiatus. I do look forward to new blogs next year especially the house hunting episodes. Whether it’s one or two, I do look forward to them. Enjoy your down time and have a great Thanksgiving with you family.

p.s. I hate to do this but I must tell you that my favorite blog was “Visiting Chris Ann” 1/8/13. Making that trip was a wonderful thing you did. Now….let’s lighten it up and remember “Just in case you’re thinking of inviting me to stay at your house for a few days” 1/9/13. So funny!!

    • Thank you so much for those comments, Pam. Chris Ann was a true inspiration to all who knew her and a very special woman. I miss her every day.

  6. I really dislike when you take breaks, but I totally understand. Enjoy everything southern including your nice warm weather. Have a really Happy Thanksgiving with your family, and I’ll look forward to reading your blog again in Dec. Be well.

  7. Best wishes for where every you go from here. Thanks for your blog the last couple of years. It was a bright spot in my day that took me for a few minutes to one of the most memorable places of my life.

  8. Brenda,

You guys take good care, and enjoy your break from the blog. November will surely go by fast. I have one more week here in Afghanistan before I head home for my month of R&R. Yeah ol’ Bear will be ready to get into action again with his civic duties. What’s that you say Bear?…..you want to sport your camouflage handkerchief from Afghanistan………I think that’s a great idea Bear to show your patriotism!…..LOL! 😉

Happy Thanksgiving to you all! Looking forward to the next post.

BTW- Jill and Hilde, put me down for Nov 21 with the pool you have going on about when Bree will post again before 1 Dec.

    • And why would I post on Nov. 21, Jason? Boy, you guys are really making me determined not to type ONE WORD until Dec. 1 – just to show you I can do it!😃

Yeahhhh! You’re coming home, and you’ll be home for Thanksgiving! If you and Sirena run out of places to eat, you can always come to the ri’vah!
I’m so excited you’ll be stateside for the holiday, but does that mean you’ll miss being home for Christmas?

Bear says he’d love to wear his cammies to work, but he has an official Pet Partner halter/bandana he’s required to wear. Bummer! But he says to let you know his mom carries her “coin” with her everywhere, and it’s the first thing she transfers when she changes purses. She doesn’t want to be caught without it!

      • I was afraid our jiving might backfire on us and make you more determined not to post. Actually, we meant it to weaken your determination, so please consider yourself sufficiently weakened. However, if you’re stronger than I think, enjoy your self until December 1. I just want you to know that really hurt to type that last sentence. My fingers kept trying to leap away from the keyboard.

    • Jason, I don’t know if you saw my comment to you on Home Sweet Home, but I will restate it here. Thank you for serving our Country and may God protect you all and provide a safe and speedy return home.

  9. Have a wonderful month. I don’t know how you do all that you do! You all deserve a much needed rest. So sorry you had such miserable weather to drive through. 75 is a nightmare even in good weather as far as I’m concerned. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and I’ll be looking forward to your next post. Of course, I will be cking off and on before the deadline arrives, I always do! Bless you all.

  10. Hey girl take ur break and enjoy it. U deserve it. I too will miss ur writings but will be checking back and read again ur other stories. Have fun in Florida. Give Ted,Maddie, and Bear my love. I am going to make it down there early spring while u are still there! Love you all. Tedder. Hey maybe we could take a quick trip to Sylvester?

  11. I just want to know one thing. Where are you going to put all that “stuff” that you pack into those boxes on the Island? Maybe you should leave it packed.

    • I’ve thought about doing that, Lowell. But we don’t have anywhere to store 17 boxes! We are “Good-willing” a lot of it as we unpack, even though we already did that once BEFORE we left the island. Not it comes down to SPACE – or lack of it.

  12. Enjoy your well-deserved time off from blogging. I can’t imagine how tired you all were when you got back home. I thought it was funny about Bear and Maddie recognizing their surroundings. Do they get that way too when you arrive on the island?? Where do you think they consider home?? GA or MI?

    • They do it both places, Karen. I don’t think they have a favorite, although Maddie sure likes being able to bark at the door and being let out – leash less to hunt lizards and chase squirrels to her heart’s content!

  13. I just want to know one thing. Where are you going to put all that “stuff” that you packed into those boxes on the Island? Maybe you should leave it packed and find a place to store the boxes.

  14. You certainly deserve a break from this blog (but hopefully not too long)! We will all go into “Bree Withdraws”! YIKES! I am making my arrangements today for my annual January trip to Mackinac & staying at the Cottage Inn for a week. Love the winter beauty and isolation.

Anyway, kick back & enjoy your time at home!

    • Ohhhh, Yvonne, I am so jealous! Hoping to make it there once this winter, but no idea when. Take lots of photos and share with me please!

  15. You sure are entitled to a break from the blogs! I’m so glad you made it home safely. Ya know, I giggle a little every time I read Booger Bottom.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, Brenda. My best to you and your family. And your other readers here too!

  16. I shall think of you and your next exciting adventures while you rest from talking to us. I like the idea of combining blogs. We love hearing about the Island but also enjoy your newsy family blog. I’ll bet most of your regular readers would say the same thing. In other words, we’d enjoy whatever and from wherever you write.
    God Bless you and yours.

  17. Well girl, so much input…could you have imagined that back when you started writing your dear sweet blogs! So many folks would be hankering for More, more, more!

I believe you Will wait til December 1..or at ,least late November 30th after a fun run from Booger Bottom.. Lol, when it’s quiet…Ted napping before bed teehee. The sweet furry kids soo full of treats from everyone curled up together.

Oh Brenda, I still remember the spreads you’ve shown us. Of Lacey cornbread…..stories of Blake’s food coma’s, grand kids etc. Oh how I am looking forward to this years installments of shear wonderment! Enjoy your family and the chance at the family time!

The sweet hubby and I will be in Florida sometime in Febuary my health allowing.. Maybe we can catch up with one another there?….

Then after Thanksgiving day probably Saturday morning starting to bake our Christmas baked goods and put up a tree for Mom and Dad to just enjoy. I hope one or a few of my sisters, family’s,friends etc. will all make it as well. 18. Enjoy your time off! I am one of those who will be entertaining – already planning dinner. I hope you have fun searching for your next home in Florida. It will be quite a contrast to the same adventure on the island. Happy Thanksgiving to all!! Here’s hoping you stick to your Dec. 1st timeline! You need that time!!

    • Thanks, Jeani! YOU have a great Thanksgiving. I’m doing the same thing – planning our dinner and making lists. Love it!

  19. Your doing awesome Brenda…..but I miss ya 😦
Have a GREAT Horton Thanksgiving if I don’t get to talk to you before then. 🙂

  20. Brenda,

Do you realize you only have less than two hours to compose a new blog? If you don’t do it, you’ll make me a false prophet and I certainly don’t want to be that.

How is the house hunting going?

    • You’re not a false prophet, Lowell, just a bad guesser.

Just got home tonight from 5 nights in Florida house hunting. Have it down to two top choices.

      • I’m glad you got me off the hook. Thanks.

When will you be deciding which house or will you be waiting to sell your place in Georgia, and can you say where the two houses are? I had picked Flagler Beach because it’s a small town and I can’t picture you & Ted in a city. Of course, since I’ve never been there, it could be a terrible place.

      • Hi Lowell! It’s between a small townhouse directly on the beach on Amelia Island and building a new home in a new subdivision in Beverly Beach just north of Flagler called Sunset Inlet. We are really struggling with our decision. Pros and cons on both places. Please lift a prayer for clarity for us.
