Before we ever met Lowell and Faye this morning at the Chippewa, they had walked down to the Windermere Hotel to meet Margaret Doud, the Mayor of Mackinac Island. It was Margaret’s grandmother Lowell worked with at the Arch Rock Curio Shop. I’m sure when Lowell writes this story in his own words, there will be a photo taken with Mayor Doud!
When they checked out, dock porters Josh Carley and Archie Horn wanted their photos taken with Lowell. Both were born and raised on the Island and love anyone who can tell stories about the “good old days”.
Something totally unplanned happened as we walked down to the ferry. As Lowell sat down to rest a moment, Brad Chambers walked by, and we introduced him to Lowell. Brad now lives in the family home on Cadotte where Lowell boarded when he worked on the Island. Lowell told Brad about sitting on the porch with a pair of binoculars, watching as the Mackinac Bridge was built. So another connection was made – past to present.
One more photo on the dock with Josh before Jill and I boarded the ferry to cross with them to Mackinaw City.
By the time you read this tonight Lowell and Faye will be back home, hopefully unpacked and settled back into their comfortable home in the country outside Olivet, MI. I know they are tired, and I know it will be a few days before Lowell will begin to sort through his notes and begin to write his own story of their journey. We will wait patiently, because we know it’s going to be a gem.
As for Ted and I, we feel as though we’ve been visited by members of our family. What a wonderful couple these two are – married 52 years and as solid in their love for each other as they are in their faith. What a joy it has been to visit with them and show them the Mackinac Island they love.

And a final note to Faye and Lowell: No matter where the Horton may be – on Mackinac Island, in Georgia, or maybe one day in Florida – our door will always swing happily open to the Greene’s. Love y’all!

The visit of a lifetime, and not just for Lowell and Faye. Everyone involved, including all of us blog readers, will remember this for a long time. Thanks so much for the photos and the ‘play by play’ info. Can’t wait to read Lowell’s version!
That’s a thought…….maybe you can meet all blog visitors at Sadie’s for ice cream…..we plan on making a stop there too in Aug. Can’t wait to hear more from Lowell “in his own words”. I’m sure they are resting up!
