Memories Made 6/5/2013

Before we ever met Lowell and Faye this morning at the Chippewa, they had walked down to the Windermere Hotel to meet Margaret Doud, the Mayor of Mackinac Island.  It was Margaret’s grandmother Lowell worked with at the Arch Rock Curio Shop.  I’m sure when Lowell writes this story in his own words, there will be a photo taken with Mayor Doud!

When they checked out this morning, Josh Carley and Archie Horn wanted their photos taken with Lowell. Both were born and raised on the Island and love anyone who can tell stories about the "good old days".

Something totally unplanned happened as we walked down to the ferry. As Lowell sat down to rest a moment, Brad Chambers walked by, and we introduced him to Lowell. Brad now lives in the family home on Cadotte where Lowell stayed when he worked on the Island. Lowell told him about sitting on the porch with a pair of binoculars, watching as the Mackinac Bridge was built. So another connection was made - past to present.

One more photo on the dock with Josh before Jill and I boarded the ferry to cross with them to Mackinaw City.

By the time you read this tonight Lowell and Faye will be back home, hopefully unpacked and settled back into their comfortable home in the country outside Olivet, MI. I know they are tired, and I know it will be a few days before Lowell will begin to sort through his notes and begin to write his own story of their journey.  We will wait patiently, because we know it’s going to be a gem.

As for Ted and I, we feel as though we’ve been visited by members of our family.  What a wonderful couple these two are – married 52 years and as solid in their love for each other as they are in their faith.  What a joy it has been to visit with them and show them the Mackinac Island they love.

Many, many thanks again to The Chippewa Hotel (special thanks to the Benser and Nephew families and Brian Bailey), The Grand Hotel (special thanks to the Musser family, Jennifer King and Ben Mosley), Shepler’s Ferry (special thanks to Misty Martinchek), and Carriage Tours (special thanks to Dr. Bill Chambers and Mike and Denise Beaudoin).  A special thanks also to Jill Sawatzki, who helped in too many ways to count.

And a final note to Faye and Lowell:  No matter where the Horton may be – on Mackinac Island, in Georgia, or maybe one day in Florida – our door will always swing happily open to the Greene’s.  Love y’all!

  1. Been following Faye and Lowell’s time on the island. The smiles tell how much they were enjoying the time there. I can’t wait to read Lowell’s story about this time. So glad you could spend time with them. Safe trip home and God’s blessing on Faye and Lowell.

  2. Do you ever wonder – is there anywhere else on the Earth where so many people smile all the time?

So glad Lowell and Faye had a wonderful time and all went well. They will have to come back again sometime. Mackinac is good for the soul.

  3. So Lowell and Faye are snug back home, hitting replay on their memories of the last few days, and still smiling! What a lovely, generous thing to do for two such loving, generous people. Well done!
Count me as another one who can’t wait to hear the rest of the story – from Lowell and Faye’s perspective! Sweet dreams, y’all!

  4. So glad the Green’s had a wonderful few days. By the way, I was born in Marshall and raised in Bellevue…a few short miles from Olivet.

  5. It looks like they had a beautiful time on Mackinac. I loved seeing the pictures and I can’t wait to hear Lowell’s story of his time on the Island.

  6. Thank you for sharing this memorable time with us, Brenda. Lowell, we look forward to your story. All good wishes to you and Faye from Susan in Colorado.

  7. Thank you Sweet Bree and Mackinac Island for gifting Lowell and Faye Mackinac Dreams for years to come!

Count me as another blog buddy that can hardly wait to hear Lowell and Faye’s story in Lowell’s poetic words.

We’ll be on the early ferry Tuesday morning….oh I can already feel the island breezes. Bree, See you for a treat at Sadie’s? What flavor will we be on?

Lowell we’re so glad we have new ways to see the island this year. Thank you.

    Blessings,
    Theresa

    • Theresa, would love to meet you at Sadie’s for flavor #4 – unless I have #4 over the weekend, which is entirely possible. Anyway, will email you my cell #.

  8. The visit of a lifetime, and not just for Lowell and Faye. Everyone involved, including all of us blog readers, will remember this for a long time. Thanks so much for the photos and the ‘play by play’ info. Can’t wait to read Lowell’s version!

  9. That’s a thought…….maybe you can meet all blog visitors at Sadie’s for ice cream…..we plan on making a stop there too in Aug. Can’t wait to hear more from Lowell “in his own words”. I’m sure they are resting up!
