Wish Granted 11/2/2012

All right, all right, all right.

I know I’m not supposed to be blogging this month, so don’t consider this a blog post – consider this my “happiness postcard” to all of you who wrote such lovely comments last night . . .

Ted told me before we went to bed that it was snowing, and Bear came in from his last potty break with a few flakes of snow in his fur.  I didn’t think much of it because we’ve had a few flakes flying in the last few days, and they never amounted to anything.

Then Ted woke me up this morning with, “You need to go look outside.  You got your wish!”

Oh. My. Goodness.

From the master bedroom deck.

We didn’t have time to take it all in because we were scurrying around with last minute details, waiting on the 8 a.m. taxi.  Once on board I tried to snap away as we rode down Cadotte, but I was having to take pics in between the weather flaps.  But still . . . .

Little Stone Church.

Cadotte and Market Street.

Market Street – It was still snowing like crazy!

The marina from the Arnold dock.

Does this look cold? It WAS cold!

Lots of folks leaving this morning, but most were just going off-island for groceries or appointments. Everyone was VERY surprised by the snow and hoping it was a good omen for what the winter would bring. Me too!

The Iroquois Hotel and one lonely tree on a beach of snow.

The Island House and East Bluff cottages.

St. Anne’s, as we pulled away from the dock.

Last glimpse . . .

. . . then we turned out toward Round Island Light.

I can’t believe it.  I’ve waited five years to see a snowfall before we headed south, and even though it came on our leaving day, I couldn’t have been any more excited.  I don’t think I stopped grinning until we got to Gaylord!

We’ve stopped in a little town in Ohio – Wapakoneta – at a very nice and clean Best Western that is pet friendly.  On to Atlanta tomorrow, then home on Sunday.

I just had to share the snow . . . .

  1. How beautiful! Everything looks like a postcard. I am so glad you finally got your snow. Surprise snows are the best. Wishing you safe travels south.

  2. That’s what I love about you Brenda..you just never give up…even when it comes to taking a small break in your blogging…you should be thinking about getting a good nights sleep and here you are, blogging pics of the snow. GO TO BED and have a safe trip tomorrow! 🙂

    • Hilde – have to stay awake to do the last doggie potty breaks. Ted is sound asleep. He is sick (has been for two days, but has just kept on going). He had to drive all day except for about 1 1/2 hours – that’s all I could do without falling asleep at the wheel. So basically I have slept all day while he’s driven. I am now wide awake (and probably will be all night, and he is exhausted, poor sweetie.

  3. It was beautiful this morning. The snow didn’t last long. It was gone by mid-afternoon. Hopefully, this was just the first of many mornings waking up to a winter wonderland (just hope the snowmobile gets here before the snow sticks around.

  4. So happy to see you NOT blogging again-ha! Great pictures and so thrilled you got to see your snow on Mackinac. 🙂 Did you pack it in your suitcase, last minute? We don’t want any yet (well, I speak only for myself…and probably most other MIganders. 😉 )!

  5. Thanks for sharing the photos! So, if you would have put snow in a baggy to take with you to Georgia then froze it when you got there…you would have snow again???

  6. I’m glad you got your wish, Brenda – the pictures are so pretty and I love your excitement over it. And hopefully what falls in Mackinac Island stays in Mackinac Island! 🙂 I’m not ready for snow yet here in OH….. Thanks for the “postcard”! (And hope Ted feels better soon.)

  7. I’ve been reading your blog for awhile now and knew you wanted to see snow before you left this year, so when I logged onto Facebook this morning and saw a picture the Grand Hotel had posted, I knew you would be so excited! 🙂 Praying for you all as you head south.

  8. Oh, Brenda, I’m so tickled for you about the snow! Maybe it was a reward for being such a good blogger this summer.
Some day we should compare the (hundreds!) photos we’ve both taken coming and going on the island. It would have to involve food, because it would take so long! I bet some of mine would be considered historical by now. . .
I’ve been thinking of you off and on all day, and sending up prayers as you go along. You may see more snow before you get home – I think they had some in the mountains. So, safe travels, a good night’s sleep, and health for Ted. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
ps – I sleep in cars, too. Have since I was a baby, so I’m told.

  9. Happy to see that your wish was finally granted and you got to experience the beautiful snow. Stay safe in your travels tomorrow.

  10. Isn’t life exciting when your wishes come true?!?! So glad you had one come true this morning. Hope there are many more that come in the following days. Have safe travels and wonderful visits.

  11. Brenda,

Thank you so much for the “postcard.” When I heard that it had snowed in the Straits area, I just knew I would be able to read something from you, but so many pictures are a surprise. I should have known. I’m glad you got your snow, but I’m also glad we didn’t get any in southern Michigan. Many years ago, we always had a big snowstorm at Thanksiving time. Although, I know you would like it, I don’t think I want the weather to revert to past patterns.

We’ve seen the sign for Wapakoneta, but we’ve never stopped there. Faye had an ancester who lived, and is buried in, Wapanucka, Oklahoma. I wonder if those two are brothers. Continue with your safe journey south. Tell Jason & Blair and Blake I said Hi. It seems like I know them (at least a little).

Good night. “Sleep tight, Don’t let the bed bugs bite. But if they do, Kick ’em ’til they’re black and blue.”

    • Lowell, you crack me up. My daddy used to say that about the bed bugs, but he didn’t say that last part – wonder if he knew it . . .

  12. Thank you, thank you for all the safe travel prayers and for sharing my excitement about the snow on Mackinac this morning. Excitement is so much better when it’s shared with friends.

  13. So happy for you Brenda! I smiled the whole way through your blog. Glad you got to see some snow before you left and the pictures are just beautiful. There is nothing like a fresh falling snow clinging to the trees. Safe travels to you and Ted and your two furbabies.

  14. Thank you so much Brenda for posting these photos of the Island as you leave it and having your wish granted. Have a good winter in Georgia……..

  15. When I saw the Island Chamber of Commerce post about the snow this morning I thought immediately. “I hope Bree got to see it!” So excited for you!

  16. Thank you so much for your postcard! I’ve been looking at pics of the snow all morning, starting with the Horn’s camera. Some were just lovely (especially the Mission Point ones) but what I loved about your series was the feeling of excitement as you snapped all the way down the road and through the harbor!
I hope you are sleeping now and will wake refreshed for the road!

  17. What a wonderful treat to see the Island all snow covered. Truly unusual and special. I know it must have been super cold so not great for all the work of leaving, but the perfect end-of-season sendoff nonetheless. Hope you have a safe trip back to Georgia.

  18. I saw the pictures on facebook and so hoped you got to see the snow! I think God sent you a smile yesterday morning – His fingerprints were all over the island. The pictures were AWESOME and let me have that one last magical moment of the season, too. Thanks again, Brenda!!

  19. Thank you for sharing! The first snow is always magical. I don’t think I’ve shared with you, besides living in Chicago we have a weekend home in LaPorte, IN. It is in the snowbelt due to the lake effect from Lake Michigan. This time of the year I often watch the weather report, since it is only an hour away drive out with hopes of being there for the first snow. The child within always smiles ear to ear when this happens! So happy you got your wish before leaving the island. Safe travels to you and Ted. Gail

  20. I’m so glad you got to have some M.I. snow before you left! Now if you could just bring a snowfall or two to South Georgia with you, my children would be so grateful!
Have a safe trip “home”. 🙂

  21. Hi! I’m writing a story for a bike mag about bike culture on the Island. I used to work’n’play on the Island and still know some folks there. I really need some photos showing Islander women on bikes. Only pics with guys at this point and that’s just not right. : ) If you (or anyone reading this), know of any, please let me know. Sooner the better — deadline looming. (The mag pays and gives credit.) Thanks! Jeff Potter

  22. Had computer problems….just got caught up on your news. Yes, you do need a rest. I’m very glad you are not giving up the blog completely. I do so enjoy it. thanks for the the wonderful last few posts! Will follow you in Ga…so glad you re continuing that as well. God bless you all….know you will enjoy seeing your GA friends and neighbors again…..looking forward to your next post. I really miss the live stream video from the island.

  23. How exciting to get your wish. It’s sort of like waking up on Christmas morning, to see the new fallen snow. Please feel free to take it with you. It’s too soon. Must admit, it does look pretty.

Please tell Ted to feel better soon. Poor guy. Hugs to you all and the puppy dogs too. Enjoy being home again.

  24. Loved the snow pictures. Don’t look forward to it here for awhile. Have a safe trip and as a writer I truly understand the need to “clear one’s mind” occaasionally. Enjoy November for that and then I shall enjoy the blogs from Georgia.

    • No, John. We’re already in Georgia and will be for Thanksgiving AND Christmas. I’m hoping the Island gets lots of snow this winter. If it does, I’m thinking about flying up for a few days.
