The Happy Holiday! 7/1/2011

We have a winner in the Mystery Spot contest below.  It’s Judy Wydick of Detroit, Michigan.  The answer is at the very end of this post.

Note:  Thanks to Mike Forrester for today’s header photo.  Mike snapped this beautiful pic of our flag when he and his family were on the island last July 4th.

The Fourth of July is such a happy holiday!  It’s in the summer, it usually involves a long weekend, and –  in the best of circumstances – large groups of family and friends gather at their favorite spot (preferably a spot close to water of some sort – the ocean, a lake, a pond, a swimming pool – oh heck, even a garden hose will do) to grill burgers or ribs or chicken and eat potato salad, pork & beans, and home-made ice cream.

Spending the Fourth on Mackinac Island takes this happy holiday to a whole new level.  The weather is forecast to be perfect here on Monday (a high of 70 and sunny skies), the water is clear, blue Lake Huron, and there are enough celebration parties planned across the island to feed thousands of visitors enough food to guarantee that shirt buttons across tummies will pop open by the end of the day.

As for the Hortons, we plan to take advantage of as much of the revelry as we can pack into three days.  A stone-skipping contest, picnic at the fort, and fireworks are just a few of the events we’ll be attending, and I promise to bring you lots of photos next week.

Since I know all of you will be just as busy as we will – and you certainly don’t want to spend any quality time indoors reading a blog – I’m going to take a long weekend off myself.  I’ll be back TUESDAY (July 5), and I promise to fill your eyes with the wonders of the Fourth of July on Mackinac Island.

Have a great weekend, travel safely, and don’t stop eating ’til you pop those buttons!  See you on Tuesday!

For the first time this year, I sat out on the deck and caught a few "rays".

THE MYSTERY SPOT

Of course we’re going to have the Mystery Spot Contest – holiday or not! The object is to be the first to identify where the object is located. When you think you have the answer, email me at brendasumnerhorton@hotmail.com. I’ll check my email several times a day, and as soon as we have a winner, I’ll post the winner’s name at the top of this blog so you can stop guessing, AND I’ll post the full photo of the mystery spot at the bottom of the blog with the answer. Is there a prize for the winner – yes there is; but the prize is secret, and the only ones who will know what it is are the winners. To be fair, I’m asking residents of Mackinac Island to please NOT guess. This is just for readers who don’t live here . . . but would like to!

And the Mystery Spot is . . . .

Where is this "Veterinarian's Office" sign located? Note: "At the Veterinarian's office" will not be accepted as the correct answer! You must give the "building" where it hangs.

Again, please email your answers to me at brendasumnerhorton@hotmail.com. PLEASE DO NOT ANSWER IN THE “COMMENTS” SECTION OF THE BLOG.

Remember, I’ll post the winner as soon as I get one, but no other postings until Tuesday.

MYSTERY SPOT ANSWER

The "Veterinarian's Office" sign is posted on the first Carriage Tour barn at Four Corners, which is located up Cadotte past the Grand Hotel.
