We have a winner in the Mystery Spot contest below. It’s Judy Wydick of Detroit, Michigan. The answer is at the very end of this post.
Note: Thanks to Mike Forrester for today’s header photo. Mike snapped this beautiful pic of our flag when he and his family were on the island last July 4th.
The Fourth of July is such a happy holiday! It’s in the summer, it usually involves a long weekend, and – in the best of circumstances – large groups of family and friends gather at their favorite spot (preferably a spot close to water of some sort – the ocean, a lake, a pond, a swimming pool – oh heck, even a garden hose will do) to grill burgers or ribs or chicken and eat potato salad, pork & beans, and home-made ice cream.
Spending the Fourth on Mackinac Island takes this happy holiday to a whole new level. The weather is forecast to be perfect here on Monday (a high of 70 and sunny skies), the water is clear, blue Lake Huron, and there are enough celebration parties planned across the island to feed thousands of visitors enough food to guarantee that shirt buttons across tummies will pop open by the end of the day.
As for the Hortons, we plan to take advantage of as much of the revelry as we can pack into three days. A stone-skipping contest, picnic at the fort, and fireworks are just a few of the events we’ll be attending, and I promise to bring you lots of photos next week.
Since I know all of you will be just as busy as we will – and you certainly don’t want to spend any quality time indoors reading a blog – I’m going to take a long weekend off myself. I’ll be back TUESDAY (July 5), and I promise to fill your eyes with the wonders of the Fourth of July on Mackinac Island.
Have a great weekend, travel safely, and don’t stop eating ’til you pop those buttons! See you on Tuesday!
