A Favor to Ask 9/15/09

No pictures today.  I just want to talk to you about something that has been on my heart and mind lately.

Over the summer, and especially the last couple of months, I’ve been asked by quite a few people if I would consider publishing some part of this blog in book form.  I have been investigating self-publishing and some other avenues, and all of that is something for me to work on (and a good extra project for the winter months in Georgia).

I know that I couldn’t use everything that I have written – as of today, that would be 124 stories and well over 1,000 photos.  I was thinking maybe I could pick the best 30 (that’s a random number – maybe less, maybe more).  I would not be able to use all the photographs – maybe only 2-3 per story.  Much beyond that and the cost of the book would be such that nobody but my husband would buy a copy.

There seems to be an almost unquenchable thirst for information about what it’s like to actually live on Mackinac Island from the people who visit here.  And I’ve been told that a book of this type hasn’t been done in a long, long time.

This blog, of course, would continue on.  I love doing it, and I love hearing from my readers.  You have become my extended family, and that is why I guess I feel comfortable asking you to be my online “editors”.

So here is the favor.  Sometime in the next week or so, when you have nothing else to do (I hear you laughing out there!), would you drop me a line either in the comment section or to brendasumnerhorton@hotmail.com and tell me which of the blogs you particularly like.  It could be done by subject i.e. history, flowers, horses, Bear & Maddie, the woods, the cottages, etc.,  or by individual blog titles.  (As you scroll down the page, there is an “Archive” section on the right-hand side with all the blogs saved there.  You just have to select a month, and they will all be listed.)  Your opinions of what you like to read about will give me a starting point for the direction I want to go with this.

I know I am asking a lot, and many of you just won’t have time to do this – and I understand perfectly.  If you do have time, and the willingness to help out with this project,  I would so appreciate your input.

I’d love to preserve in some way this love of writing and photography that I have finally begun to express in my “senior years”.  The peace and joy doing this brings me is so hard to explain, but I plan to keep trying.   And hopefully, my “musings” (as my son calls them) bring a little peace and joy your way in the process.

Thanks to each and every one of you for tuning in everyday to my ramblings.  You are loved.  God bless.

  3. Great idea! I will be sending you my favorites soon!! Having knee surgery kept us from getting back to the Island this summer..only made it there in May when I came with my daughter to bring my granddaughter Alyssa to work there for the summer..so I have especially enjoyed keeping in touch with all the activities via your blog this summer.. Thanks Brenda!!

    • Thanks! Alyssa must have left already – I don’t think I have seen her in a while – but I could just not have been where she’s been lately.

  4. What a great idea! I will certainly be one of the first in line to purchase your blog book when it is completed. You are truly in your element. Thank you for using your talent to benefit the rest of us! I have so many favorites: especially pictures with flowers such as the Grand, gazebos, cottages, landscapes, etc. Scenery that views down to the water, horses and their carriages, the wedding at Little Stone Church, Arch Rock. Basically, I love it all but those are some that really touched me.

    • Thanks so much for in the input, Debra. I’m already beginning to see a pattern, I think, and I’ve only heard from a few people – some here and some by email. The next few days are going to be fun!

  5. HI, Bree! You are so sweet to bring daily Island information to all of us loyal followers. My favorite information are regular daily events (really!) I especially loved getting to know how the Island prepares for carriage rides, special events (horses leaving for the winter) and anything that probably seems “normal” to Islanders. Keep up the great work!

    • Thanks so much for your input, Joyce! There are so many other things I wanted to write about this summer that never got written – where in the world did the time go? But there’s always NEXT summer, good Lord willing!

  6. I think you should highlight your ‘Day in the Life’ features! And you know my favorites are of woods and shore! Let the Tourism Bureau handle the pictures of the famous stuff.

    • Thanks, Irene! Wish I had done more of the “Day in the Life Of” series – but there’s always next summer – good Lord willing!

  7. If I had to pick one (which is difficult, to say the least) it is the story of Ted and Cathie visiting the site of their grandparents cottage. Simply beautiful.

  8. I just can not narrow it down I love each piece each day and the pictures are perfect.Deffinatly companion books are in order one for mom, dad, teens and a picture/dogs view kids book I can see the book signings already! Do you need an agent LOL.

  9. The stories told from Bear and Maddie’s point of view really made me laugh. I have also enjoyed the beautiful scenery, the churches, and the homes. I think the book is a great idea for you to work on this winter. I hate to tell you, but you are going to be so lost without being on your “magical island” this winter. Things seem rather dull around here!!!

    • Home can never be dull – it will be good to be back in Georgia. I love it here, and I always will – but it’s not home. See ya’ll soon!

      Brenda

  10. Lulu.com is a wonderful self-publishing site with reasonable prices 🙂
I think your stories in a book would be great! You offer a very intimate and whimsical perspective on island life! 😀
