Walking on Sunshine! 5/26/2013

Good Day Sunshine!  Sunshine On My Shoulders!  Walking on Sunshine!

Are you catching my theme here?

If the first few days of last week were about as dark and stormy as they could get, the last few days have more than made up for them!  We’ve had sunshine, blue skies, and not a cloud in the sky.  It’s still a little chilly, but nothing an extra layer won’t fix.

Maddie was SO excited to be outside on dry grass. She is the fussiest little thing about her feet getting wet!

Bear, who couldn't care less whether it's wet or dry, was just happy to be able to run around off the leash, instead of being dragged into the condo as soon as he'd taken care of business!

With the sun

With the sun came the crowds to the Wings of Mackinac Butterfly Conservatory . . .

. . . and the

. . . and the Surrey Hill Carriage Museum, where folks were eating outside for the first time this spring!

Not finding Denise unloading riders at the front of the Carriage Museum, Bear made a bee-line for the back lot - where he waited for her to get off the phone before begging for treats.

Before going in we checked on the progress of our Lilac bushes. Leaves are coming on really fast! I still haven't checked downtown . . . have GOT to do that!

Blue sky, sunshine, flowers bloomin’, children say-in’ hello. Row boats, bird notes, People smilin’ everywhere that they go!

My 15-minutes walking excursion on Friday didn’t seem to set my foot back, so I was rarin’ to go when we had the opportunity to go over to Cedarville Saturday with friends Orietta and Steve – and their teenage neighbor Max. Ted had sailed with Steve last fall from the Mackinac Island Marina to the Viking Boat Harbor to take their sailboat out of the water for winter.  Now it was time to sail it back to Mackinac.

We all piled into Orietta's car in St. Ignace and made the 45-minute drive to Cedarville. A quick stop at a grocery store, and we had the makings for lunch in the sun, which we enjoyed on a picnic table at the Viking Boat Harbor dock.

The boat was in the water, and while the guys puttered around getting ready to sail, I noticed some activity out at the end of the dock.

Now I don't know too much about fish, but this little boy was VERY excited when he pulled this one in. The funny thing was, after he landed it, he didn't want anything to do with it - wouldn't even hold the line so I could get his picture . . .

The funny thing was, after he landed it, he didn’t want anything to do with it – wouldn’t even hold the line.  So his big brother helped him out – and told me it was a Northern Pike – about six lbs. worth.  After the photos, they removed the hook and released it to grow some more.  Good job guys!

When we were here in the fall, the shoreline was ablaze with red and yellow foliage.

The 45-minute road trip took four hours by boat. Ted snapped this shot of Steve and Max putting up the sails, but the wind held out for only about 30 minutes. A motor provided power for the rest of the trip.

Steve and Max. I hope to write a story on this young man this summer. At 13, he is a budding entrepreneur and has a thriving delivery service on the island. He's on call seven days a week - at most any hour to run errands for islanders.

Just a note on Steve and Orietta.  They will be leaving the Island for a year, beginning in July.  They are off to Tanzania as doctors with the Peace Corps.  What an awesome opportunity to serve others!

Sunday Sunshine!

The Sunday-before-Memorial-Day service at Little Stone Church is always touching, and today was no different.  Island veterans Donald “Duck” Andress and Ben Horn have presented the colors at the service for the last six years, representing the Island’s American Legion Post 299.

Andress is a veteran of the Korean War, and Horn served in Germany and during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

After the presentation of the colors, a wreath was brought to the altar – in memory of all soldiers who have laid down their lives for their country.  Our minister, Dr. Vince Carroll, who served in the Vietnam War, spoke on his experiences in that country as a Naval Chaplain.  Every pew was filled this morning as worshippers gave thanks to our veterans.

After the service, a large group walked over to The Gate House for lunch. These folks are our foundation here on the Island.

SO MUCH TO COME!

There is so much coming up this week that I’m having to make lists on the calendar so I don’t forget something!  Here’s a few things about to happen . . .

  • Monday – Memorial Day service at the Post Cemetery and downtown
  • Monday evening – Ted and I are going out to dinner with Cindy Irish and her husband.  Cindy is a writer who reads Bree’s Blog – both on the Island and in south Georgia.  She wants to talk to us about a fictional town she is using in her next book that will be based on someplace very near and dear to Ted and I (more to come on that)!
  • Tuesday – Bear FINALLY gets bathed and groomed, so I’ll be off-island all day.
  • Wednesday – Volunteering for Shepler’s as they welcome 1,300+ Detroit Chamber of Commerce representatives to the Island.
  • Thursday – Resting (I hope)
  • Friday – Back to Shepler’s as the Detroit Chamber leaves the Island
  • Saturday – Resting (I hope)
  • Sunday – BIG, BIG, BIG DAY!  Lowell and Faye Greene arrive on Mackinac for the first time in 26 years.  And boy do they have some surprises waiting for them.  I cannot WAIT to write this story (MUCH more to come on that)!

It will be at least Tuesday night before I publish again.  We’ll see how the week is going at that point and go from there.  Have a great Memorial Day on Monday and, if you’re traveling, stay safe!  God bless.

  1. The picture of Bear in the dandelions is great! I can’t wait to hear about Lowell’s visit. Rainy & foggy days sound like heaven right now to me. I am visiting Laughlin, NV right now and it has been 100 degrees the last 3 days! I can’t wait to get home to Iowa later tonight where it cool and rainy! LOL!

  2. I am so excited for Lowell and Faye and can’t wait to hear all about their visit ..from both sides. Wish I could be there.
It’s chilly and rainy here. Sure hope this isn’t how the rest of summer is going to go. Miss the weather in NM. 🙂
Have a safe and wonderful Memorial Day!

  3. My husband says Pike have teeth and the little boy might have been afraid he was going to bite him. Great pictures as always!

  4. I am all excited for Lowell and Faye’s visit, and I won’t even be there. Can only imagine how ramped up all of you are getting! It seems so appropriate that it follows Memorial Day.
Let me add my thanks to all who have served and are serving in all branches of our military. Our parade starts at 10, followed by a memorial service at the cemetery. We share War of 1812 credits in our town with Mackinac, so usually have a squad dressed that way in the parade. Nice to think we’ll share somewhat similar experiences on such a worthy holiday. Enjoy!

  5. I love seeing everything thrive. Wish we could be with you but maybe next year. Love Bear and Maddie out on the economy.

    • Cathie, I know you and Charlie are going to be with us in spirit this summer. Gather your strength and take care of yourselves so you can be here next summer. Don’t make us come to New Orleans after y’all! We WILL do that you know, and Charlie you REALLY don’t want to be cooped up in a car with Ted for two days arguing on the fastest route to take to Mackinac!

    • Lowell and Bree–stop being so nice to us. It makes my eyes leak. Looking forward to the 2nd and all the surprises. ALL of you need to stay robust and healthy(even my furry relatives).

  6. Wishing you a very happy and safe holiday!
My husband and I were on the island from Thur-Sun (just got home today). Although thankful for the sunshine…brrrr, it was chilly! Our time there always goes so fast (too fast)…but we’ll be back (with our boys) for a week July 4th! Take care!

  7. I am so excited for Faye and Lowell. I hope the weather cooperates and the Lilacs start to bloom by next week. To everyone . . . have a great Memorial Day!

      • I would love it! I will be on the island June 2-7. Will you have Internet access/cell phone? Sounds like Brenda has a lot of exciting plans for you. I look forward to hearing how the Island has changed since 1987. Just let me know of your plans when you get to the Island. I can be available anytime.

      • Love the Chippewa hotel. I will look you folks up. 4 more days. Hope the lilacs will be in bloom.

  8. Loved all the pictures. My sister works part time at Macy’s and she was helping one of our state Representatives who is coming up to Mackinac this week, his last name is Cavanaugh. He is related to Detroit’s former mayor. I guess he needed to pick up a few new suits for the conference.

Also some people from SME, where she works full time will be there as well. She wished that she could have made it to this conference but they only needed a couple of people and she wasn’t one of them.

  9. Brenda,

I just read the blog and you wrote, “Sunday – BIG, BIG, BIG DAY! Lowell and Faye Greene arrive on Mackinac for the first time in 36 years. And boy do they have some surprises waiting for them.”

I told Faye what you said about the surprises and her first words were, “That’s scary.” That was also my first thought. I hope you aren’t planning to make me walk across Arch Rock. I did that when I was in my teens, but I don’t think I could do it now, so please don’t make me do that.

I hate to do this because I know you seldom make mistakes, but I must tell you that it was actually 26 years ago that we were on the Island, although I guess by now 10 years doesn’t make any difference.

We are really getting excited about coming, so please make the lilacs bloom at least a few of them. I think I told you we plan on driving to Houghton Lake in time for church there and then on north to Mackinaw City and Shepler’s Ferry.

Now, since the blog wasn’t about me (and I’m not as important as I like to think I am), allow me to say, the picture of the dogs looks so peaceful, and I’m so glad they can have dry green grass to lie on. (Have you ever noticed that the color green is misspelled?) It’s also nice to see that Bear is enjoying his stroll among the dandelions.

I wish I could have been on the sail boat from The Snows to the Island. I couldn’t have done any of the needed work, but the trip sure would have been nice.

    Only six days to go!

    • Lowell, I could have sworn you said 36, but then my hearing is as old as I am, so it’s going like everything else!

Tell Faye not to worry – all surprises will be nice ones and won’t involve any physical exertion – guess I better cross off that hike up to Ft. Holmes 😊! Counting down. . .

      • Cathie,

I’m sure it must be 26 years ago that we were on the Island because we found a picture that Faye had taken of me in front of the Windermere Hotel and it had 1987 embossed on the side. At least, I don’t think we waited 10 years to have it developed. No, I know we didn’t because we were living in Oregon in 1976 and we didn’t come back to Michigan them.

  10. That is so cool that Lowel and Faye will be making a trip to the Island!! How awesome! I know you will capture all of it for us. The sailboat pictures were great. I am so glad to read your blog as often as I can, it really makes me happy!!!

  11. Everything looks beautiful! Lovely colors, bright whites and soooo clean looking. The past photo of the sunset is so vivid it looks like a painting. Great photos as usual by you and others.

  12. So glad is it “countdown time” for Lowell and Faye. Our Yorkie does not like his feet wet either! I have been told small dogs are finicky that way. Love all the pictures and am glad you finally have sunshine! We finally have it too!
