Mackinac Island SPRING Update 3/24/2013

It’s officially Spring, and in seven weeks we’ll be on our way to Mackinac!

Ok, I know that’s still almost two months, but when you break it down into weeks, it doesn’t seem as long.  We’ve been having so much fun this winter here at the lake, and right now azaleas are blooming and all the trees are budding out.  It’s a beautiful time in the South.

But . . .

March is nearly over, and once April begins I know my spirit will take an automatic turn toward the North.  I can already feel a shift in my inner being, a little voice whispering in my ear, “Mackinac is waiting . . .”

I know last Sunday I foolishly said the winter photos were becoming fewer and fewer.  But that was before another snow storm hit the Island this week! Several beautiful photographs today as the Island camera buffs chronicle the new snow and what’s happening on Lake Huron as the big melt-down begins.

iiii

Yep – I think Islanders have a little while yet before they can put up the snowmobiles and go back to transportation on bikes!

On the east side of the Island, water is taking the place of ice and creating some interesting formations . . .

It’s good to go finally from “Winter” updates to “Spring”! And even though the snow is still high on the island, the ice is melting in the Straits, and freighters are once more passing the lighthouses.

It won’t be long now . . . .

  1. As much as I enjoyed your blog, for the life of me, I can’t figure out why it’s entitled, “Mackinac Island Spring.” Maybe in 7 more weeks. At least, I hope so. However, at the moment (9:44pm) it is 29 degrees on the Island and here in Southern Michigan also. Maybe it is spring after all.

  2. Sure miss seeing it all on the webcams,(even the cams at the Chip are down) thank goodness for all the awesome photos that everyone sends in. These are some exceptional pictures!

  3. Awsome pictures! The ice formations are so bizarre looking. It might say “spring” on the calendar, but mother nature has another idea apparently. It seems it would take a long time to melt all the ice and snow that is still up that way.

    • Hopefully, Karen, all that melting ice and snow will raise the water levels a few inches in the Great Lakes!

  4. I’ll agree with Lowell! Excellent header shot. Really liked all the pictures I saved them all in my Mackinac Island desktop photos folder.

7 weeks is not to far away! I have 10 weeks left on this duty rotation before I get a month break. Hoping the wife and I can make it up to the island in June.

Enjoyed the weekly update Bree! Makes time in the sand go by faster when I look forward to these posts. If you haven’t finished Heart of Ice I highly recommend it!

  5. I am sitting in Iowa and it about 25 degrees and our snow has melted. Whenever I hear people complain about how cold it is, I tell them if they lived on Mackinac they would be cold and BICYCLING to get around (if there is no snow on the ground). The islanders are a tough bunch!

  6. Oh my gosh….I thought that cottage was on fire!!! The reflection of the sunrise was so vivid, it had me fooled at first! Gorgeous pictures.

Bring on Spring!! We just got 9 inches of snow overnight. Surely that’s the last blast of winter?

  7. Hi Bree,

Your blog has given me literally hours of reading pleasure. I love your wit, your writing style, and your loving stories about special people in your life. The stunning pictures are beautiful additions.

Of course, I share your love for Mackinac Island! 🙂

My husband and I will be staying at Grand Hotel during the Memorial Day weekend and a few days after that.

I’d love to buy you an ice cream cone if you’d have the time to meet in person. I confess I also want to talk about Booger Bottom, GA with you, too!

If it doesn’t work out, I still want to take this opportunity to say thank you for sharing yourself here.

    • Cindy- me again. I totally misread your comment – Memorial Day – not THIS WEEKEND. Same thing though – please email me when you get settled in and we’ll work something out. Can you tell I’m a little spacey right now?!

      • Haha! Traveling makes me nuts. I find it very stressful, so I understand completely. Don’t you wish you could just beam yourself from place to place?

Overpacking is one of my most irritating personality flaws – ask my husband. He’s the one grumbling and rubbing his lower back at the dock in Mackinaw City.

I will e-mail you Monday. Thank you for your sweet replies. Speaking of sweet, maybe we can meet at Sadie’s. Woof.
