Mackinac Island SPRING Update 3/24/2013

It’s officially Spring, and in seven weeks we’ll be on our way to Mackinac!

Ok, I know that’s still almost two months, but when you break it down into weeks, it doesn’t seem as long.  We’ve been having so much fun this winter here at the lake, and right now azaleas are blooming and all the trees are budding out.  It’s a beautiful time in the South.

But . . .

March is nearly over, and once April begins I know my spirit will take an automatic turn toward the North.  I can already feel a shift in my inner being, a little voice whispering in my ear, “Mackinac is waiting . . .” 

I know last Sunday I foolishly said the winter photos were becoming fewer and fewer.  But that was before another snow storm hit the Island this week! Several beautiful photographs today as the Island camera buffs chronicle the new snow and what’s happening on Lake Huron as the big melt-down begins.

The 1st day of Spring on Mackinac – Mission Point was still encased in snow . . .

. . . and so was the little golfer across from the Bistro on the Green.

I’m wondering if these are the same bicycles folks have been photographing all winter.

Yep – I think Islanders have a little while yet before they can put up the snowmobiles and go back to transportation on bikes!

Wow! The snowdrifts are pretty darn high in some places!

On the east side of the Island, water is taking the place of ice and creating some interesting formations . . .

. . . like an ice version of Arch Rock.

Hmmmm . . . looks like a sea monster’s big mouth with some really sharp teeth!

The quaint and lovely Small Point Cottage at sunrise.

The U.S. Coast Guard cutter Hollyhock works the ice between the lighthouses.

Clark named the ice figure on the left “Old Man Winter”.  Awesome, awesome photo!

Clark and Robert both seem to like rising early and capturing the most amazing sunrises. This one from Robert is from today – Palm Sunday. And all God’s children said, “Amen.”

It’s good to go finally from “Winter” updates to “Spring”! And even though the snow is still high on the island, the ice is melting in the Straits, and freighters are once more passing the lighthouses. 

It won’t be long now . . . .
